Scope and Contents

The Italian Heritage Society Records contain materials related to the operations of the Italian Heritage Society of the Cape Fear in Wilmington, North Carolina. The collection spans from 1996 to 2005, and it follows the creation and growth of the society. Contents include meeting minutes, membership lists, membership applications, financial reports, event flyers, newspaper clippings, emails, and other correspondence. The Italian Heritage Society Records also include scholarship materials from their work to establish an academic scholarship for high school students in the Cape Fear, photos from the society’s participation in the Azalea Festival, and other Italian American organization research, such as resources from the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), the Embassy of Italy in Washington D.C., and UNICO National.

Historical Note

The Italian Heritage Society of the Cape Fear began in April 1999 with their first meeting. The Italian Heritage Society formed to celebrate and explore Italian American culture in Wilmington. They held and participated in numerous events in the community, as well as within their organization, such as their annual holiday dances at UNCW each December and the Azalea Festival in the spring. According to the NC Secretary of State website, the society dissolved in October of 2020.

Acquisition Information

This collection was transferred from University Archives in December 2020. Annette Anderson, who worked at UNC Wilmington and served as one of the society's early secretaries, collected these records during her tenure.
