Biographical Note
Billie Ruth Stewart was born in Sewanee, Tennessee in 1945. She earned a B.A. in Psychology/Sociology from Huntingdon College, in Montgomery in 1967 and her M.S.W. from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1969. From 1966-1989 she was a medical/psychiatric social worker or school psychologist.
In 1983 Billie Ruth began weaving. Until 1989 she combined and integrated her two careers. As a basket maker she is primarily self-taught and has won several awards for her work. Billie Ruth teaches her basket making skills to eager participants around the U.S. She has operated her business JABOBS, Just A Bunch Of Baskets, in New Bern, NC, Las Vegas, Nevada, Wilmington, NC and Bakersville, NC where she currently resides.
