These papers include histories of UNCW, the UNCW Biology Department, Wilmington College and biographical material, alumni newsletters, and newspaper and magazine articles pertaining to Dr. Walter C. Biggs. Also included are early school records dating from 1948-1953, and a copy of the constitution of the Order of Isaac Bear.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Walter Briggs was a faculty member of the the biology science department at UNCW from 1960-1994.

Biographical / Historical

Dr.Walter Clarke Biggs, Jr. was born June 17th 1931 in Phoenix, North Carolina.

He graduated from New Hanover High School in 1949, and went on to Wilmington Junior College. He received his BS in Biology from East Carolina in 1953. He was a Graduate Teaching Assistant and conducted graduate study at the University of Kansas 1953 - 1954. He served in the US Army from 1954 - 1956 and then taught Biology at New Hanover High School from 1956 to 1957. Walter served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Texas A&M University from 1957 - 1960 and received his MS in Zoology with a minor in Wildlife Management from Texas A&M in 1960. He conducted graduate studies at Duke University Marine Laboratory 1961 Summer Institute. He received his PHD in Zoology with a minor in Physiology from NC State University in 1969.He was an Assistant Professor at Wilmington College 1960 - 1969 and became an Associate Professor at Wilmington Junior College in 1969. He continued teaching at UNC-Wilmington in the Department of Biology with full tenure until his retirement in 1995.

He passed October 4th, 2003 and is buried in Leland, NC at the Goshen Baptist Church Cemetery.
