Scope and Contents

This collection contains a variety of Columbus County court records and legal documents from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries. Documents bills of sale, land deeds, warranty deeds, loan agreements, and court documents such as court summons, witness statements, depositions, jury decisions, and travel payments. Topics of the court cases include a 1874 Polling Place Riot in Wilmington, N.C., cases of indebtedness, illegitimate children cases, cases of affray, and assault and battery. There are also a number of business records for the shipping company of Wooten and Richardson.
