Historical Note
The North Carolina Living Treasure Award was established in 1987 by Dr. Gerald Shinn, through the Museum of World Cultures, to recognize North Carolina artists who work in the traditional arts. The Museum of World Cultures has since become a part of the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Randall Library, which now administers the North Carolina Living Treasure Award. Awarded annually until 1995, the title of North Carolina Living Treasure is now granted biennially.
