Historical Note

First organized in 1923, the James Walker Memorial Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association is still active today. Lois Toomer, Class of 1908, was elected first president. When James Walker Memorial Hospital closed in 1966 the Alumni Association started a scholarship fund to assist nursing students at local nursing schools. This scholarship is still being awarded (as of 2001) and over 1400 students have received some form of financial assistance from the scholarship fund.
