St. Luke Zion AME Church Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection contains documents and photos of the St. Luke AME Zion Church in Raleigh, NC, especially focused on the 145th anniversary on April 4, 2010. There is a booklet commemorating the event. Within the booklet, there is a message from Reverend Williams L. Johnson III thanking the people who put together and attended the celebration, as well as their dedication to the church. Also, there is a brief history of the church and congratulations from members of the community wishing the church a happy anniversary. Additional photographs, brochures, and history of the event are on six CDs within the collection.

Biographical / Historical
St. Luke AME Zion Church was founded by James Walker Hood during the Civil War era. On April 8, 1865, the church was established in Wilmington, North Carolina by thirteen followers of Hood's leadership. Enduring two fires, one on December 23, 1877 and the other on January 1, 1944, St. Luke AME Zion Church has been rebuilt multiple times. Today, the church has expanded to many different properties.
