Scope and Contents
This collection contains papers pertaining to Joseph A. Moore’s service in the United States Navy during World War II. Moore served on the USS Uhlmann with the Fast Carrier Task Force, specifically Task Force 38 (3rd Fleet) and Task Force 58 (5th Fleet). The collected documents, directly and indirectly, reflect the daily life of a serviceman and war in the Pacific arena. Included are correspondence, certificates, photographs, collected Japanese ephemera, and ship logs documenting daily responsibilities, war news, and tactical information.

Joseph A. Moore, Jr. was born to Joseph Moore, Sr. and Mollie H. Moore, in Selma, N.C. on June 13th, 1925. He grew up in Selma and then joined the United States Navy and served during World War II. After retiring from the Navy, Moore moved to Leland, N.C, where he and his wife owned and operated the Maco Light Restaurant & Moore’s Motor and Tire Sales. He married his wife, Margaret E. Moore October 23rd, 1948, and had eight children. Moore died on December 22nd, 2003.
