Biographical / Historical

Captain Charles "Cal" R. Calhoun commanded the ship the USS Dewey in the Philippines during WWII. During this time the ship survived a typhoon in December of 1944. After his military career ended, Captain Calhoun became the Vice Chancellor of Minnesota's State University System, where he began to apply his experience with storms to reinforced architecture. When he moved to North Carolina's barrier islands, he became familiarized with the impact of hurricanes on the coast and coastal infrastructure. He authored two other books: Typhoon: The Other Enemy, and Tin Can Sailor: Life Aboard the USS Sterett 1939-1945. He co-authored the book The Hurricanes Are Coming! with architect and Minnesotan colleague Laszlo Fulop. The book provides homeowners with ways in which to fortify their homes against storms.
