Wilmington Council of the Navy League Photographs
Scope and Contents
This collection contains 34 photographs that represent an active period of civilian involvement with the Wilmington Council of the Navy League in southeastern North Carolina primarily from the 1950's to the 1960's. The images represent interactions of League members including Gene Edwards, Bobby Tate, and Mayor O.O. Allsbrook, with local military installations and service men. Additional images depict trips taken on behalf of the Wilmington chapter of the Navy League to Washington D.C. and aboard Naval vessels. Finally, one image depicts Jesse Helms in his role as a Navy Recruitment Officer.

Biographical / Historical
The Navy League of the United States was founded on November 5, 1902 with the support of President Theodore Roosevelt. The purpose of the Navy League is to educate citizens and elected officials on naval matters as well as to support naval officers and their families. The Navy League has always been a civilian-run organization and remains active with over 70,000 members. The Wilmington Council is the U.S. Navy League's 174th Council.

Photograph titles and descriptions were created based on verifiable information and may contradict the handwritten captions.
This collection was originally procssed by Carroll Jones in 2003. It was reprocessed by Sam Marsicano with the assistance of Special Collections Librarian Rebecca Baugnon in 2020.
