Jessie Clifford Rehder was born in Wilmington, North Carolina on April 29, 1908, the daughter of Carl Frederick and Jessie Stewart Rehder. She received an A.B. and M.A. in English from Randolph-Macon Women's College and Columbia University. At UNC Chapel Hill, Rehder worked toward a Ph.D. in education and joined the English department faculty in 1947. Being a prolific writer herself, Rehder taught as an instructor and lecturer in creative writing. In 1962, Rehder became an associate professor, which made her the first woman to be granted a tenure position in the department. Rehder worked at UNC Chapel Hill for twenty years until her death on February 3, 1967. As a tribute to Jessie, a literary prize was established in her name and awarded annually for more than thirty years. Jessie Rehder is buried in Oakdale cemetery.
