The Captain Edward W. Ward Collection includes various items related to Ward's experience during the Civil War including Confederate Bond Coupons, a loan to the Confederate States and papers regarding his military service. The collection also contains newspaper articles and documents regarding settlement of debts by made by Ward.

Biographical Note

Edward W. Ward was born in New Bern, North Carolina in 1828. He was raised in Onslow county and married Herietta Josephine Leicraft, daughter of David W. Simmons. Ward enlisted in the Confederate State Army as Captain of Company B, 41st State Troops in 1861. Company B was known as the "Gatlin Dragoons" and included 130 men. After the capture of New Bern, Company B's duty was to patrol the roads and streams of eastern North Carolina as a guard against further intrusion. Ward tendered his resignation in 1863 on account of physical disability. Before and after the war, Ward was a practicing physician in Onslow county and also well known as a farmer and merchant. In 1891, he moved to Pollocksville in Jones county where he resided until his death in 1902.
