Biographical / Historical
Claude Howell was an American artist born in Wilmington, North Carolina on March 17, 1915. His hometown inspired much of his work, drawing inspiration from the architecture of downtown Wilmington and the coastal community.
After graduating High School in 1931, the Great Depression prevented him from attending art school. He instead went to work for the Atlantic Coastline Railroad as a stenographer, a job he worked for 20 years. He practiced art whenever he could, studying in artist colonies over the summer in New England.
Howell found success as an artist in North Carolina, booking shows around the state, as well as getting national attention. He was the first North Carolinian to display his art at the Metropolitain Museum of Art in New York. His last show was in 1995 at the Cameron Museum of Art in Wilmington North Carolina. Howell was also the founder of the Art department at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. HeHowell passed away February 3, 1997 at the age of 81.
