Biographical Note

The Wright family has been a presence in Wilmington (Newton) since the arrival of Captain Thomas Wright in 1739. Thomas married Ann Grainger, granddaughter of Joshua Grainger, who came to Wilmington from Charleston in 1729, and owned a shipyard at the foot of Church Street. Bishop Thomas Henry Wright, born in Wilmington in 1904, attended Tileston School on Ann Street, and was President of first graduating class at New Hanover high School. After graduation from University of The South, Sewanee, TN, he returned to Wilmington for a year prior to entering Virginia Episcopal Seminary, Alexandria, VA. Reverend Wright was elected Bishop of East Carolina, in 1945, again returning to Wilmington and his home Diocese. He passed away in 1997.
