Biographical / Historical
McLean Page was born on December 25, 1875 to parents Rev. Preston Daniel page and Rachel Page. He and his family lived in Whiteville, North Carolina. McLean was a faithful Baptist, along with his wife Mary Jane Gore Page. Mary Jane was born on November 6, 1883. They wed December 3, 1903 and had seven children together. They had six girls and one boy, as well as 36 grandchildren. McLean Page died on August 31, 1965. Mary Jane Gore Page died on September 3, 1968.
The Page family is believed to have been sharecroppers, as evident in the crop lien paperwork in this collection. Sharecropping is a form of tenant farming predominant in the American south from the 1870s to the 1950s. African Americans were disadvantaged in the post slavery plantation economy, and sharecropping was often the only means for work.
