Mike Halmkinski
Scope and Contents
Mike is a professional photographer, who has lived and worked in Waves, N. C. since 1973. His photographs have appeared in many publications, including Newsweek, The Washington Post, Orion Nature Quarterly, the Christian Science Monitor, Southern Living, and Coastwatch. He is a long-time member of the Coastal Federation and over the years has contributed numerous photographs for the use of the Federation. In addition, he has been active in various environmental issues on Hatteras Island. He has worked with Jan DeBlieu in collecting water samples to check for runoff pollution, was a member of the Friends of Hatteras Island, an organization that worked to protect Buxton Woods from over-development, and helped preserve the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station. He has occasionally appeared as a witness at regulatory hearings on behalf of the Federation. Currently, he is chairman of the Advisory Committee of the North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island.
