Biographical Note

Reverend Thomas Frederick Davis was born in Wilmington, North Carolina in February 1804 to family descended from John and Samuel Ashe. Davis graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 1822 and was ordained in the church in 1831 by Bishop Levi Silliman Ives. He served as deacon in two North Carolina before becoming ordained a priest in 1832. The following year he became rector of St. James and served from 1833-1836. Upon leaving, he eventually moved to South Carolina and was elected Bishop of South Carolina in 1853. Davis aligned himself with the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Confederate States America during the Civil War, which saw his brother George Davis as Attorney General of the Confederate States. Davis served as South Carolina's bishop until he died in 1871. Davis was married to Ann Ivie Moore, with whom he had five children. Ann died in 1888.
