General - "Thru the Years", 1969-2019
Scope and Contents
These thirteen folders contain material generally related to Bertha's many contributions to the local school system and county at large. They have been maintained in their original order and arrangement with which Bertha donated them, labeled "Thru the Years." She frequently spoke on panels, at events, and was a member of many committees, mostly connected to education, race relations, and volunteering. Items are mostly newspaper clippings, publications like magazines and newsletters, personal letters, and notes. Highlights include: letters from a number of North Carolina Governors asking Bertha to serve on prominent education and relations committees in Folder 7; information related to her Star-News Lifetime Achievement Award from 2004 in Folder 10; and first hand accounts of various events during the turbulent high school integration days in the late 60s and early 70s, and the experiences of Hartford Boykin in working at the school, in Folder 12.
