Biographical Note

Reverend Dr. William Hammond Milton was born in 1868 and joined St. James as rector in 1909. He nearly left the church in 1916, but his requests in order to stay were granted by the vestry. He later took a leave of absence in the fall of 1918 to work for military camps during World War I, just shy of the war's end. In November that year, the vestry approved the purchase of a car for him. Milton took a year leave of absence in 1920-1921, during which time Reverend W.H. Wheeler served as temporary rector. He formally resigned and retired in 1936, at which time he was elected Rector Emeritus. Milton died in June 1946, and a memorial plaque for him was installed in the church in 1949. The church's Milton Hall was built and named in honor of him in 1955.
