Biographical Note

Reverend Robert Brent Drane was born in Maryland in the late 1790s and served in the War of 1812. After attending Harvard, he was ordained a deacon in 1827 and married Augusta Endicott in 1828. They had two sons and were married until her death in 1847. Drane served at St. James Church in Maryland until 1836, when he came to Wilmington's St. James. Save for a break from 1843-1844 when he was president of Shelby Colelge in Kentucky, Drane was rector of St. James through 1862, overseeing the construction and opening of the new church in 1839-1840. In 1844, he obtained his Doctorate in Sacred Theology (STD) from UNC Chapel Hill and later married Catherine Caroline Parker in 1850, having another son. Drane died in October 1862 from yellow fever, an epidemic in Wilmington since August of that year. A wall in St. James features a plaque in his memory.
