Scope and Contents
This collection contains one journal belonging to Rear Admiral George Ralph Marvell of confidential notes from his time with the General Board of the U.S. Navy between December 1932 and August 1933. Notes from October 1933 to January 1935 are after his active duty service and from his time on the U.S. Navy's retired list.

Biographical / Historical Note
George Ralph Marvell was born in Massachusetts on September 26, 1869. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1889 and served in the U.S. Navy for over four decades. He served in World War I and commanded both the USS Louisiana and USS Arizona for some time. He was also awarded the Navy Cross by the President of the United Staes for his service in World War I. He retired as a rear admiral in 1931 and served on the General Board of the U.S. Navy for a few years after. He died on November 12, 1941 and was buried in Annapolis, MD.
The General Board of the U.S. Navy was created in 1900 and disbanded in 1961. It was a group of senior admirals towards the ends of their careers in the U.S. Navy who served as a sort of advisory board and general staff. Membership varied from nine to fourteen members and was overseen by a chairman.
