Biography

William Eugene "Gene" Edwards was born in Onslow County, North Carolina on April 17, 1910, the son of Mamie Page and William McGhee Edwards.

Gene's career included being involved in his father's wholesale grocery business, being a partner in the wholesale and retail flower business with his brother, working with his son in Edwards Greenhouses, and being a commercial real estate developer.

Gene was an active member of the Wilmington Rotary Club and served as both club president and Rotary District 773 Governor. He was also recognized as a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Additionally, he served on the board of the YMCA, as chairman of the New Hanover County Airport Commission, and on the New Hanover County ABC Board.

Gene was a member of the Cape Fear Country Club, the Carolina Yacht Club, and the Cape Fear Club. He was also a communicant of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He married Elizabeth Hutaff Edwards and had three children.

Gene died on January 16, 2006 and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
