Historical Note

The University of North Carolina Wilmington Board of Trustees began operation in 1972. The Board of Trustees provides oversight for UNC Wilmington in alignment with the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. It succeeded the 100-member Board of Trustees of the Consolidated University of North Carolina (1969-1972) and the Wilmington College Board of Trustees (1958-1969).

The Board of Trustees works with the Chancellor and senior administration on planning and policy for the university, in alignment with the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. There are 13 members including the Student Government Association president, ex officio. Members are chosen as follows:(a) eight elected by the Board of Governors; (b) four appointed by the General Assembly, two of whom shall be appointed upon the recommendation of the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, and two of whom shall be appointed upon the recommendation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives; and (c) the president of the student government of the institution,ex officio.[See G.S. 116-31(d)]. Terms are four years long.

According to Chapter 116-33 of the North Carolina General Statutes:

Each board of trustees [of the UNC system] shall promote the sound development of the institution within the functions prescribed for it, helping it to serve the State in a way that will complement the activities of the other institutions and aiding it to perform at a high level of excellence in every area of endeavor.
